🇧🇩🤝🇯🇵 JETRO Reaffirms Strong Commitment to Strengthen Trade and Investment Ties with Bangladesh

A New Chapter in Japan-Bangladesh Economic Collaboration Begins with Promise and Potential

Dhaka, Bangladesh –
In a powerful demonstration of friendship, economic partnership, and long-term vision, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to enhancing trade and investment relations with Bangladesh. This commitment was declared during a prestigious courtesy visit to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) headquarters, where both parties discussed a comprehensive roadmap to deepen cooperation.

This landmark visit marks a bold step forward in strengthening the strategic and economic alliance between two thriving nations in Asia—Japan and Bangladesh.

🌏 A High-Profile Meeting with Purpose

Led by senior JETRO delegates, the Japanese team met with BGMEA President Faruque Hassan and other prominent board members at the BGMEA headquarters in Dhaka. The discussions were centered on multiple layers of cooperation—not only within the garments and textile sectors but also in broader areas such as sustainable development, technology exchange, innovation, and capacity building.

“JETRO believes Bangladesh holds tremendous potential to become a vital trading partner for Japan in South Asia,” stated the delegation.

👕 Focus on RMG Industry: A Pillar of Bangladesh's Economy

Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector—contributing over 80% to the country’s total export earnings—was the highlight of the meeting. Japan is emerging as a key market for Bangladeshi garments, and JETRO expressed satisfaction with the continuous improvements made in quality, compliance, and production efficiency.

The Japanese side lauded Bangladesh’s efforts to uphold international standards of safety, environmental responsibility, and labor welfare, making the country an attractive sourcing destination.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said,

“We are proud to lead the change in responsible garment manufacturing. With Japan’s support and collaboration, we aim to become a high-value garment hub catering to the evolving needs of global brands.”

🌱 Bangladesh: A Global Leader in Green Factories

One of the most inspiring aspects of the meeting was JETRO’s admiration for Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in establishing eco-friendly and sustainable garment factories. With over 200 LEED-certified green factories, Bangladesh is now home to the highest number of green garment factories in the world.

The Japanese delegation expressed keen interest in supporting Bangladesh’s green initiatives and promoting energy-efficient machinery, eco-friendly dyeing processes, circular fashion, and waste management technologies.

“The green transformation in Bangladesh’s RMG sector is a global benchmark,” said a JETRO official.
“Japan sees a valuable opportunity to collaborate in smart and sustainable industry practices.”

🛠️ Expanding Beyond Garments: A Broader Trade Vision

While the garment sector remains central, both parties agreed that the future of Japan-Bangladesh relations lies in diversifying trade and investment avenues. Some of the key areas of interest discussed include:

  • Technical textiles and functional fabrics
  • Digital transformation and Industry 4.0 solutions
  • Capacity building and technical training of workers
  • Technology transfers and machinery modernization
  • Improved logistics and port infrastructure
  • Joint ventures in automation and robotics

JETRO emphasized that Japanese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are eager to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh, especially with the country set to graduate from the LDC category by 2026.

🔄 Building a More Resilient Supply Chain

The COVID-19 pandemic and recent geopolitical shifts have disrupted global supply chains. Japan, like many developed economies, is now looking to diversify its sourcing and production base. In this context, Bangladesh has emerged as a resilient and reliable partner, offering a young workforce, competitive cost structures, and growing sustainability credentials.

JETRO believes that relocating certain production facilities to Bangladesh could strengthen Japan’s supply chain resilience while boosting industrial development in Bangladesh.

📊 Investment, Innovation, and Inclusive Growth

BGMEA shared its ongoing initiatives to improve worker welfare, digital factory systems, fair wages, and gender inclusion. These align well with Japan’s global development goals and corporate social responsibility (CSR) principles.

The possibility of introducing Japanese-funded skill development programs, advanced textile R&D labs, and joint innovation hubs was also discussed.

President Faruque Hassan added,

“We welcome Japanese investment in knowledge-driven areas. With innovation and partnerships, we can take Bangladesh’s industry to global excellence.”

📣 Call for Greater Trade Facilitation

JETRO and BGMEA also addressed existing challenges, such as tariff structures, customs procedures, and infrastructure bottlenecks. Both parties agreed on the need for:

  • Enhanced bilateral trade agreements
  • Reduction of non-tariff barriers
  • Faster port clearance and logistics support
  • Improved digital trade documentation

A smoother and more efficient trade ecosystem will benefit both countries and encourage more Japanese buyers and investors to consider Bangladesh as their strategic sourcing and production hub.

🏁 Looking Ahead: A Partnership Built on Trust

As the meeting concluded, both JETRO and BGMEA reiterated their shared vision of inclusive, sustainable, and technology-enabled economic growth.

This visit is not just a diplomatic gesture—it is a clear signal of Japan’s intent to build a deeper, more strategic relationship with Bangladesh in the years ahead.

“Our doors are open, and our vision is clear. Together with Japan, we are ready to shape the future of ethical fashion and sustainable trade,” concluded Faruque Hassan.

🔍 Final Thoughts

JETRO’s courtesy visit to BGMEA is more than a headline—it’s a turning point. As both countries seek to adapt to global challenges and seize new economic opportunities, their collaboration can redefine regional trade dynamics and set new benchmarks for sustainability, innovation, and mutual growth.

With Japan’s experience and Bangladesh’s potential, this partnership is a winning combination for the future.
