Patrick Mahomes Gives Cold Reaction After Lions Player Snubs His Handshake and Starts Brawl
A postgame handshake meant to show sportsmanship turned ugly on Sunday night after a Detroit Lions player snubbed Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — sparking a heated brawl between both teams.
The incident occurred moments after the Chiefs defeated the Lions 30–17. Mahomes approached Lions safety Brian Branch to shake hands, but Branch ignored him and walked away. Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster stepped forward to confront Branch, leading to an altercation in which Branch reportedly struck Smith-Schuster in the helmet, knocking him down. The situation quickly escalated, with several players from both sides joining the scuffle.
While chaos erupted on the field, Mahomes chose not to engage and instead kept his distance. Later, during postgame interviews, he offered a calm but firm response. “We play the game in between the whistles,” Mahomes said. “They can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to, but we play the game in between the whistles.”
Brian Branch later admitted that his reaction was “childish” and expressed regret for his behavior. Lions head coach Dan Campbell also criticized the incident, calling it “inexcusable” and emphasizing that such actions don’t represent the team’s values.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid condemned the attack on Smith-Schuster, describing it as unnecessary and dangerous. Smith-Schuster was seen leaving the field with a bloody nose but is expected to recover quickly.
The NFL is reportedly reviewing footage of the incident and may issue fines or suspensions to those involved.
Mahomes’ composed response drew praise from fans and analysts, who viewed it as another example of his leadership and professionalism. While emotions ran high, the Chiefs’ star quarterback stayed focused on the bigger picture — maintaining control and setting an example for his teammates.
